Product Description A look at the career of Oscar-winning director Roman Polanskione of the few directors who has moved from art-house classics to the Cineplex, with films like Rosemarys Baby, Chinatown, and The Pianist.Roman Polanski is a towering figure in modern cinema. He has done it all: psychological thrillers (Killer in the Water, Cul-de-sac); horror (Repulsion, Rosemarys Baby); film noir (Chinatown); the literary classics (Tess); even comedy (The Fearless Vampire Killers). In this timely retrospective of Polanskis career, film historian and critic Denis Meikle draws together the strands of a complex, sometimes contradictory career. Meikle looks at how Polanskis troubled life has informed his filmmaking and analyzes his unique skills as a director, skills that have allowed him to tackle such diverse themes and genres with unerring success. Finally, the latest Polanski film, Oliver Twist, is examined and placed in the context of the directors 50 years at the heart of cinema.

| Customer Reviews: Odd man, indeed. But fascinating. December 12, 2007 K. Anderson (Los Angeles, CA United States) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Very well-researched biography of famed director Roman Polanski manages to find room for both analysis of his works as well as his life. Covering as it does so much territory, it works best as a companion piece to previous works on the director, filling in the blanks and adding a surprising amount of heretofore unearthed trivia and and info on the man and his films.
If there is any criticism to be leveled at the book, it is the author's rather belabored attempts to plead Polanski's illegal status at every opportunity(Polanski's a fugitive from justice in the U.S.) while failing to take note of the fact that Polanski's crime is not merely one of statutory rape, but of flouting the Justice System of a country that had provided him so many freedoms.
Despite this aggressive aggenda, the portrait painted of Polanski here is refreshingly balanced and a welcome look at a great artist and flawed man
