During the 50s, a young Wajda Created three brilliant war dramas about the tragedy of the Polish resistance movement. A generation (1955). The story of a wayward teen living on the outskirts of occupied Warsaw who joins the underground in a desperate bid to liberate his homeland, Wadja's style was brutal and confronting yet artful and expressionistic. Kanal (1957), sees members of the doomed Warsaw Uprising escape into the hell of the city sewers as the Nazis approach, and won the Special Jury Prize at Canned, giving Wajda international acclaim, Ashes and Diamonds (1958), which interweaves the fate of Poland with one man, a resistance fighter who becomes an anti-communist assassin at the end of the war but also finds love.
